The Ford Explorer XLT is the volume trim of Ford's three-row mid-size SUV. It sits above base and below Limited, ST-Line, ST, King Ranch, and Platinum. The XLT is where most Explorer buyers land — it has the essential features without the premium-trim price tag.
The 2020 redesign moved Explorer back to rear-wheel-drive architecture and introduced the current platform. 2020+ XLTs are significantly improved over the 2011-2019 generation in ride, interior, and infotainment — but also had early-production quality issues. 2021+ XLTs are the sweet spot; most of the launch-year bugs were sorted by mid-2020.
The 2.3L EcoBoost four-cylinder is the standard engine on XLTs — surprisingly capable and efficient. The 3.0L EcoBoost V6 is available as an upgrade and common on higher trims. 10-speed automatic is standard. AWD is available and common — AWD XLTs hold value 5-7% better than 4x2 XLTs in snow-belt regions.
The XLT Premium Package adds heated front seats, remote start, and a nicer wheel package — worth $1,500-$2,500 on used value. The XLT Sport Appearance Package adds black exterior trim and unique wheels — depreciates slower than standard XLT. If you can find an XLT with both packages, it's often the best deal on the Explorer market.
Explorer XLT pricing is relatively stable nationally. Texas and the Southeast run $1,000-$1,500 premium; Pacific Northwest runs close to par. AWD XLTs carry stronger premiums in the Northeast and Mountain West.
Very competitive matchup. Explorer XLT has better driving dynamics; Traverse LT has more cargo space and a roomier third row. Pricing runs within $500-$1,500 at equivalent trims. Traverse tends to be slightly cheaper used. Both are solid family haulers — choice comes down to whether you prioritize driving feel (Explorer) or cargo (Traverse).
2021-2022 Explorer XLT is the sweet spot. Launch-year quality issues resolved, pricing settled, features refined. A 2022 XLT with 30k-50k miles typically runs $28,000-$34,000 depending on region and package.
Rated for 5,300 lbs of towing — adequate for boats, small campers, and most hauling needs. If you need to tow more than 5,000 lbs regularly, step up to the 3.0L EcoBoost V6 (7,500 lbs). But for occasional towing, the 2.3L handles it fine.
Our model expects prices to soften over the forecast window.
