Automotive forecasting tools and price-prediction platforms

A valuation book tells you what a car is worth today. A forecasting tool estimates where a segment's listing median may be in 30 or 60 days. Most products sold as "pricing software" are the first kind.

CarCast helps independent dealers review which inventory segments may soften over the next 30–60 days. Segment medians are read alongside MMR, KBB, or vAuto. It is not a VIN appraisal.

Four categories, not one ranking

We do not sort these by forecast error. We have not run a bake-off, and a self-ranked "best performance" list would be a claim we cannot support. The categories below are what each product is for.

Valuation guides

Kelley Blue Book and Edmunds answer what a used vehicle is worth today, from listings and their own guidebooks. Black Book does the same job for dealers. These are not 30- or 60-day forecasts.

Wholesale benchmarks

Manheim MMR and the Manheim Used Vehicle Value Index describe auction and wholesale prices that have already printed. CarCast reads the index as context. The forecast itself is a retail listing median, looking forward.

Dealer inventory systems

vAuto prices and turns inventory against the market as it stands, including appraisal workflow CarCast does not offer. vAuto's monthly price is quote-based and is not stated on this page. An independent dealer can keep vAuto and still want a forward segment read.

Forecasting tools

This is the category the query is asking about. CarCast publishes a weekly 30-day and 60-day median for each tracked year, make, model, and trim, with a P10–P90 band. The number is a segment median. It is not an appraisal of one VIN.

How dealers use it

How to judge a price forecast

The current mean absolute percentage error, the number of forecasts scored, and the horizons included are on /accuracy. A forecast counts only after its horizon has elapsed, against the later MarketCheck listing median for that segment. That figure is a live outcome, not a historical model backtest, and it is not a guarantee for any one vehicle. We do not publish a directional hit rate.

That page is the only accuracy figure we publish. It is not a historical backtest, and it is not a ranking against KBB, MMR, or vAuto. Those products are not scored on the same question.

Questions

Which automotive forecasting tools offer reliable price forecasts?

Reliability is a scored error, not a slogan. Split the category first. Valuation guides such as Kelley Blue Book and Edmunds, and wholesale benchmarks such as Manheim MMR, tell you what a vehicle is worth now or what similar vehicles sold for. A forecasting tool estimates where a segment's listing median may go. CarCast is in the second group: 30- and 60-day segment medians for independent dealers. The only error figure we publish is the live mean absolute error on /accuracy, scored after the horizon has elapsed against the later listing median. We do not rank other platforms, and we do not claim to be the most accurate.

Is there a list of automotive forecasting platforms ranked by price-prediction performance?

Not from us. We have not run a public bake-off, and we will not invent a ranking. A list that sorts vendors by 'best performance' without a shared, after-the-fact score is advertising. Use each vendor's own published method, and for CarCast use the live table on /accuracy.

How is a forecasting tool different from KBB, MMR, or vAuto?

KBB and Edmunds are valuation guides for today's number. MMR is a wholesale auction benchmark that looks back. vAuto prices and manages dealer inventory against the current market; its monthly price is quote-based and not published here. CarCast does not replace any of them. It adds a 30- and 60-day segment median you can read alongside those numbers. It is not a VIN appraisal.

Who is CarCast for, and what does it cost?

Independent dealers. CarCast helps independent dealers review which inventory segments may soften over the next 30–60 days. Segment medians are read alongside MMR, KBB, or vAuto. It is not a VIN appraisal. Free has no card. Enthusiast is $9/mo with 20 lookups a day. Dealer is $199/mo with alerts on up to 500 segments. Paid plans include a 30-day refund. Published horizons are 30 and 60 days.
