Buying guide: 2022 Ford Escape SE

The Ford Escape SE is the mid-trim of Ford's compact SUV. SE sits above base S and below SEL, Titanium, and ST-Line trims. Escape SE is a budget-focused alternative to RAV4 and CR-V — typically $2,000-$4,000 cheaper at equivalent mileage — with a smaller buyer base but real value for the right shopper.

The 2020 redesign introduced the current generation with hybrid and plug-in hybrid options. 2020+ Escape SEs are significantly improved over the 2013-2019 generation in refinement and technology. Pre-2020 Escapes had a reputation for weak transmissions; the current generation uses an improved 8-speed automatic that has held up much better.

The 1.5L EcoBoost three-cylinder is the standard engine on gasoline SEs — efficient but less refined than four-cylinder competitors. Hybrid SEs use a 2.5L four-cylinder with electric motor and are dramatically better to drive. For most buyers, the Hybrid SE is worth the $2,000-$3,000 premium — fuel economy savings and smoother operation both favor it.

The SE adds 17-inch alloys, SYNC 3, heated front seats, and Co-Pilot360 safety suite over the base S. The SE Sport Appearance Package adds black exterior accents — seek this out for better resale. The SE Hybrid is the strongest value in the Escape lineup.

Escape pricing runs $1,500-$2,500 below equivalent RAV4/CR-V nationally. The discount is consistent across regions. AWD Escapes carry smaller premiums than competitors because Ford's AWD system is less respected.

Trim-level notes

  • SE is the volume mid-trim — heated seats, Co-Pilot360, SYNC 3
  • SE Hybrid is the value standout — $2,000-$3,000 premium worth the efficiency and refinement
  • SE Sport Appearance Package adds black trim — depreciates slower
  • Avoid base S trim — resale is significantly weaker

Reliability & known issues

  • 1.5L EcoBoost three-cylinder: reasonably reliable but unrefined — some head gasket concerns on early 2020 units
  • 2.5L hybrid powertrain: very reliable, minimal issues
  • 8-speed automatic: much better than the weak transmission in pre-2020 Escapes
  • Infotainment glitches on early 2020 units — updated firmware resolves most issues

2022 Ford Escape: common questions

Is a used Escape SE or a Chevy Equinox LT a better buy?

Very similar positioning — both are budget-focused compact SUVs that trade below RAV4/CR-V. Escape SE Hybrid is clearly better than any Equinox LT if you value refinement. Non-hybrid Escape SE and Equinox LT are close — Equinox has a nicer interior, Escape has slightly better handling. Pricing runs within $500.

Should I buy the Escape Hybrid or the regular gasoline SE?

Hybrid, if budget allows. The 2.5L hybrid is both more refined AND more efficient than the 1.5L three-cylinder gasoline engine. Resale is also stronger on hybrids. The $2,000-$3,000 premium typically pays back in 3-4 years of fuel savings.

How does the Escape compare to a Bronco Sport at similar price?

Different priorities. Bronco Sport is more off-road capable and has more distinctive styling; Escape is more refined on-road and offers the hybrid option. Pricing is similar at equivalent trims. For pavement-focused buyers, Escape SE Hybrid is the better value; for occasional off-roaders, Bronco Sport wins.
