Buying guide: 2023 Toyota RAV4 LE

The Toyota RAV4 LE is the base trim of America's best-selling compact SUV, and it represents exceptional long-term value. LE sits below XLE, XLE Premium, Adventure, TRD Off-Road, and Limited. Despite being the entry trim, the LE includes Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 standard — the same advanced safety suite as the top-trim Limited.

The 2019 redesign brought the current generation, with more angular styling, the TNGA-K platform, and improved fuel economy. 2019+ RAV4 LEs hold value roughly 7-10% better than 2013-2018 fourth-gen units. The 2021 refresh added standard Android Auto and a better infotainment interface — seek this out.

The 2.5L four-cylinder is the only engine on gasoline LEs — no upgrade engine is offered at this trim. The 8-speed automatic is smooth and reliable. AWD LEs command a $1,500-$2,000 premium over FWD LEs, and AWD sells faster on dealer lots in most regions. Hybrid LE is not offered (hybrid starts at LE Hybrid, a separate model) — if you want a hybrid, you're looking at a different vehicle.

The LE has cloth seats, 17-inch steel wheels with covers, manual climate control. It's spartan — if you want leatherette, dual-zone climate, or 19-inch alloys, step up to XLE. But the LE's running costs are the lowest of any compact SUV and it retains value nearly as well as XLE despite costing less new.

RAV4 pricing is less regionally volatile than trucks. Expect national pricing to run within a $1,500-$2,000 band across regions. AWD LEs carry stronger premiums in Colorado, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and the Northeast due to winter weather demand.

Trim-level notes

  • LE is the entry trim — cloth seats, steel wheels, Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 standard
  • LE + Weather Package adds heated front seats and a heated steering wheel — worth $500-$800 on used value in cold regions
  • LE AWD commands a $1,500-$2,000 premium over FWD — faster resale in most markets
  • Avoid bare-bones LEs without the Convenience Package — harder to sell when you flip

Reliability & known issues

  • 2.5L four-cylinder (A25A-FKS): very reliable, minimal recurring issues
  • 8-speed automatic: occasional early-production shudder complaints on 2019 units — mostly resolved via TSB
  • Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 alignment can drift after windshield replacement — verify functional after glass work
  • Rear hatch strut failures on 2019-2020 units — cheap fix, worth checking on older examples

2023 Toyota RAV4: common questions

Is a used RAV4 LE or a used Honda CR-V LX a better buy?

Very close. CR-V LX has a nicer interior and more cargo space; RAV4 LE has marginally better fuel economy and slightly stronger resale. At equivalent mileage expect pricing within $500. Our 60-day forecasts show them moving in parallel. Either is a strong value buy.

What's the best year used RAV4 LE to buy?

2021-2022 RAV4 LE AWD is the sweet spot. Post-refresh infotainment is significantly better, 8-speed transmission is fully sorted, and pricing has settled. Expect to pay $22,000-$27,000 depending on mileage and region.

Should I pay the premium for an AWD RAV4 LE?

If you live in a snow-belt state, yes — AWD LEs resell faster and hold value better. If you're in a mild climate, FWD is fine and saves $1,500-$2,000 up front without significantly hurting resale.
